A youth statement at the IAEA International Conference on Nuclear Security

Draft for review. It will not appear on the live site until approved.

In May 2024, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held its International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS 2024) in Vienna. The week opened with a two-day ministerial segment and brought together ministers, officials and experts from the Agency’s Member States.

Alongside the official delegations, the IAEA invited a Nuclear Security Delegation for the Future: university students and early-career professionals from around the world. Yerdaulet Rakhmatulla was one of 24 delegates selected from about 500 applicants. During the conference, the delegates took part in career workshops and supported technical sessions, and Yerdaulet assisted the IAEA’s technical officers at two of them.

On 24 May, at the closing plenary, the delegation presented a joint statement. It called for cooperative approaches that strengthen nuclear security for everyone, and asked the nuclear security community to keep widening diversity in the field, so that all people can benefit from nuclear technology and no one is left behind. Yerdaulet took part in preparing the statement.
